End of May Family Newsletter

May 20, 2026
Dear Melzer Families,

It is hard to believe how quickly the pages of the calendar are turning. This past month has been a whirlwind of activity, and our students have truly risen to the occasion. From the beautiful harmonies at our Band and Orchestra concerts to the exploration of careers at the Career Fair, it has been a joy to watch their growth.

As we begin our celebration of summer, the pace isn't slowing down! Our calendar remains full of year end activites and continued learning. To help you keep track of the busy weeks ahead, please read through this newsletter for important reminders for May and June.

Let’s finish the school year strong!

Your Partners in Education,
Angela Maki, Principal
Janeice Millon, Assistant Principal

Respectful Conversations

Students are currently learning how to have respectful conversations with others. Students learned different strategies to handle big or tricky problems. For example:
  • I statements
  • Stop, walk, and talk
  • Practicing self control
Families you can review these strategies with your child at home when discussing conflicts.
Three educational posters display strategies for assertive communication and self-control.

Educational Equity and Diversity Cohort Opportunity

We are accepting applications for the 2026-2027 SEED (Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity) Cohort.

This is a national program that partners with communities, institutions, and schools to develop leaders. At the end of the cohort, these leaders will have the tools to guide their peers in conversations that drive personal, institutional, and societal change. At D63, SEED inspires individuals to learn, listen, think, debate, and build a stronger, more equitable community.

SEED is open to all staff [at every level and department] and to our school community members [parents, guardians]. We'd love to have you join us.

If you're interested in participating, check your calendar before committing. Make sure you can attend all sessions because attendance is mandatory. Participants are permitted only one absence.

2026|2027 SEED Cohort will meet on Thursday evenings from 4-7 p.m. on the following days:
  • September 10
  • September 24
  • October 8
  • November 12
  • December 10
  • January 7
  • February 11
  • March 11
  • April 8
  • May 13

All sessions will take place at the Family Resource Center [FRC], and dinner will be provided. We will have childcare available for school-aged youth [ages 5-13] at no cost to SEEDlings.

Please complete this application by July 10, 2026, if you would like to be considered for participation.

We'll be in touch to confirm enrollment once we've received and reviewed all applications.

If you have any questions, reach out to our SEED Facilitators, Angelica Schab, Naomi Carroll, and Domenica Montesinos at seed@emsd63.org.

All parents and approved pick-up persons must show a valid state-issued ID to sign a student out early (this does not include early dismissal days). Photos of ID and/or screenshots of state IDs will not be accepted.

Alternative options – accepted, but not recommended - require staff-assisted check-in:
  • Green Cards
  • Passport
  • Mexican Consular ID Card
  • Military Identification Card
