June Family Newsletter

June 1, 2026
Dear Melzer Families,

Thank you for an exciting year of learning and fun! We are incredibly proud of our students for conquering difficult challenges, sharpening their problem solving skills, and using great communication tools like "I-statements." We know they will carry these valuable lessons with them through the summer and into the upcoming school year.

As your principal and assistant principal, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Melzer community for allowing us to lead and serve this community. We are thrilled to continue celebrating our students this week, and we are actively collaborating with the incoming administration to ensure a smooth transition for next year.

In this newsletter, you will find important information regarding summer learning opportunities and reminders for the last week of school.

Your Partners in Education,
Angela Maki, Principal

RULER: Blueprint

The Blueprint questions is a tool that students use at school to deal with conflict. As your students encounters conflict over the summer you can use similar language to help them problem solve and reflect.

Educational Equity and Diversity Cohort Opportunity

We are accepting applications for the 2026-2027 SEED (Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity) Cohort.

This is a national program that partners with communities, institutions, and schools to develop leaders. At the end of the cohort, these leaders will have the tools to guide their peers in conversations that drive personal, institutional, and societal change. At D63, SEED inspires individuals to learn, listen, think, debate, and build a stronger, more equitable community.

SEED is open to all staff [at every level and department] and to our school community members [parents, guardians]. We'd love to have you join us.

If you're interested in participating, check your calendar before committing. Make sure you can attend all sessions because attendance is mandatory. Participants are permitted only one absence.

2026|2027 SEED Cohort will meet on Thursday evenings from 4-7 p.m. on the following days:
  • September 10
  • September 24
  • October 8
  • November 12
  • December 10
  • January 7
  • February 11
  • March 11
  • April 8
  • May 13

All sessions will take place at the Family Resource Center [FRC], and dinner will be provided. We will have childcare available for school-aged youth [ages 5-13] at no cost to SEEDlings.

Please complete this application by July 10, 2026, if you would like to be considered for participation.

We'll be in touch to confirm enrollment once we've received and reviewed all applications.

If you have any questions, reach out to our SEED Facilitators, Angelica Schab, Naomi Carroll, and Domenica Montesinos at seed@emsd63.org.

Specials Update

Art

What an incredible turnout we had for our Art Show and Literacy Night last month! Thank you so much to all the families who came out to support our students and celebrate their incredible creativity. As we wind down the school year, students are busy packing up their portfolios and bringing their artwork home. It has been an absolute honor working with these growing artists this year. From building new technical skills to making messy, beautiful memories in the art room, it has been a joy to watch their confidence grow. Thank you for a wonderful year of community and creativity. I hope everyone has a fantastic summer, and I am already looking forward to all the inspiration next year will bring!

Library

Melzer students had an incredible year for reading as they checked out 8,251 books from our school library! If your child still has library books at home, please return them as soon as possible.

PE

Students had the perfect weather to participate in our end of the year Field day event. In the morning, the 5th graders were in charge of running 14 different stations for the K-3 students. Stations like, Jump the Snake, Pancake Party Relay, Scooter Soccer, and Striker Ball. In the afternoon, the 4th and 5th graders had their own field day with Horseshoes, Nukem, Human Tic-Tac-Toe, and concluded with popsicles at the playground. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make field day successful!

Music

As we wrap up the school year, students are reviewing all the things they’ve learned! We are having fun playing rounds of Rhythm Four Corners and completing color-by-solfege worksheets. Students are celebrating their hard work with fun Boomwhacker play-alongs and games of Music-Pictionary. It has been a wonderful year of making music together. Everyone should feel proud of how much they have grown as musicians!
